January 2024

Feature: you can now transition to Google Cloud NetApp Volumes using the Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud user interface. For more information, see Transition to Google Cloud NetApp Volumes.

August 2023

Update: Google Cloud NetApp Volumes is now available for purchase. NetApp Volumes is a first-party, fully managed and integrated data storage service provided by Google Cloud, whereas NetApp Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud is a third-party offering of NetApp services in Google Cloud. You can continue to use NetApp Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud in existing projects.
Feature: A new replication pair between us-central1 (Iowa) to northamerica-northeast1 (Montreal) is now available. For more information, see [Requirements and considerations for volume replication].
NetApp has upgraded NetApp Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud to support Netlogon RPC Sealing, as detailed in CVE-2022-38023.

April 2023

Update: As a response to Microsoft vulnerability CVE-2022-38023, Windows server updates released on or after April 11, 2023 begin support for Netlogon RPC sealing. This may impact Active Directory domain controller connections used for Cloud Volumes Service. NetApp intends to upgrade the service to support RPC sealing by June 13, 2023. If you install the update and enable enforcement mode to require sealing, your data access to Cloud Volumes Service volumes may be affected. If you set Windows domain controllers to require sealing, then your Active Directory connection no longer authenticates users of your SMB volumes and NFS volumes using LDAP extended groups. Additionally, data access using these volumes stops.

February 2023

Feature: Google Cloud now supports native VMware vSphere workloads with Google Cloud VMware Engine.
Feature: Cloud Volumes Service now allows you to log administrative actions.
Update: Performance expectations now include details about the differences in performance between CVS service type and CVS-Performance service type. There are also several new performance FAQs.
Update: The Billing FAQs section now includes information on how to change your billing account.

January 2023

Feature: The CVS-Performance service type is now available in Madrid (europe-southwest1). For region support, refer to the Global Regions Map for Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud.
Feature: The CVS service type now supports restoring a snapshot to a new volume, which may be used for cloning a volume.

December 2022

Feature: Shared VPC networks are now supported for the Cloud Key Management Service configurations. Multiple projects (host and service) can connect to NetApp Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud and share access to the volumes in the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) network.

November 2022

Feature: The CVS-Performance service type is now available in northamerica-northeast2 (Toronto). For region support, see Global Regions Map for Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud.
Feature: A new replication pair between northamerica-northeast1 (Montreal) and northamerica-northeast2 (Toronto) is now available. For more information, see Requirements and considerations for volume replication.
Feature: The CVS-Performance service type now supports access-based enumeration. See Create an SMB volume.
Feature: Global access to Active Directory is now available for the CVS service type. This storage pool level feature allows volumes to connect to Active Directory domain controllers outside of the pool's region. For more information on supported Active Directory topologies, refer to Identify supported AD DC topologies.

May 2022

Feature: The CVS-Performance service type is now available in the us-west4 (Las Vegas) region. See Regional availability for Cloud Volumes Service.
Feature: Shared VPC is now supported for the CVS service type. This feature lets multiple projects (host and service) connect to NetApp Cloud Volumes Service for Google Cloud and share access to the volumes in the VPC network.
Feature: New replication pairs:

March 2022

Feature: Cloud Volumes Service now uses storage pools for volumes of the CVS service type. Storage pools let you flexibly scale volumes from 1 GiB to 100 TiB and utilize the performance of the underlying storage pool independent of volume capacity. For more information, see Manage storage pools.
Feature: You can now select specific zones for provisioning and failover of zone-redundant storage pools of the CVS service type. You can also initiate a cross-zone move.
Feature: Customer-managed encryption keys now support keys associated with a separate customer project. See Set up customer-managed encryption keys.
Feature: Cloud Volumes Service now supports specification of an Active Directory connection type to allow a connection to be used for volumes of the CVS and CVS-Performance service types in a single Google Cloud region.

November 2021

Feature: Cloud Volumes Service now offers support for customer-managed encryption keys for volumes, for more control and ownership over operations. See Set up customer-managed encryption keys.
Feature: Simultaneous access of Cloud Volumes using dual protocols (NFS and SMB/CIFS) is now supported for the CVS-Performance service type. See Manage dual protocol access.
Feature: Volumes of CVS service type now offer performance of 128 MiB/s, increased from 32 MiB/s. See CVS service types and CVS service levels.

October 2021

Feature: With support for in-zone and multi-region high availability options for the CVS-Performance service type and multi-zone high availability for the CVS service type, Cloud Volumes Service now offers improved uptime of 99.99% backed by the Service Level Agreement for Cloud Volumes Service (PDF).
Feature: The CVS-Performance service type is available in additional regions: asia-northeast1 (Tokyo) and us-west3 (Salt Lake City). See Regional availability for Cloud Volumes Service.
Feature: Volume replication for SMB and NFS volumes is now generally available. See Volume replication.
Update: Starting in November 2021, Cloud Volumes Service will limit growth beyond the allocated size for volumes of the CVS-Performance service type. For monitoring recommendations, see Monitor cloud volumes.

July 2021

Feature: NFS volumes of the CVS-Performance service type now support AES encryption of Active Directory communications and the ability for backup users to receive elevated file/folder privileges. See Manage Active Directory connections. For API support, see Update Active Directory with Kerberos and backup operators.
Feature: The CVS service type now supports access-based enumeration and hiding for SMB shares and uses a default site to limit AD domain controller discovery. See Create and manage SMB volumes.
Feature: Metrics for cloud volumes have been updated to make them easier to understand and use. See Monitor cloud volumes.
Feature: Volume replication is supported for NFS and SMB volumes. See Volume replication.

May 2021

Feature: The CVS service type now supports SMB protocol/workloads. This feature is in preview. See Service types.
Feature: The volume replication feature now includes reverse sync, which you can use to replicate changes on the secondary volume back to the original source volume as part of a full recovery workflow. See Reverse sync volume replication relationships.
Feature: NFS volumes of the CVS-Performance service type now support extended groups using the Active Directory LDAP service. For more information, see Create an NFS volume.

You can disable this feature if you need support for local NFS client users, see Set up Active Directory for NFS.

March 2021

Feature: Cloud Volumes Service now supports integrated backup of volumes to Google Cloud Storage, providing long-term protection for disaster recovery and archiving for the CVS service type. See Back up and restore a cloud volume.
Feature: Cloud Volumes Service now supports zone-redundant volumes that offer higher volume availability within a cloud region for the CVS service type.
Feature: Cloud Volumes Service now offers data protection with replication across regions. See Use volume replication to protect your data.

February 2021

Feature: Cloud Volumes Service now supports Active Directory groups of users to have built-in backup operator privileges. Members of this group can override read and write permissions on files or folders if they are opened with backup intent.
Feature: Cloud Volumes Service now offers support for bringing non-RFC 1918 IP addresses into the NetApp network for the CVS-Performance service type.

November 2020

Feature: The CVS service type is generally available. See Regional availability for Cloud Volumes Service.
Feature: The CVS-Performance service type provides encryption in transit with NFSv4.1 Kerberos protection and SMB encryption.
Feature: The CVS-Performance service type is available in an additional region: asia-southeast1 (Singapore). See Regional availability for Cloud Volumes Service.

August 2020

Feature: Introduces a new Cloud Volumes service type. Cloud Volumes Service provides two service types: CVS and CVS-Performance. The new general-purpose CVS service type is intended for standard workloads, such as file and application shares, secondary storage, and moderate application workloads that need up to 100 MiB/s of performance. The CVS-Performance service type name refers to the service that was previously available as Cloud Volumes Service before the introduction of separate service types.
Feature: The CVS service type is available in the following regions: us-west1 (Oregon), us-east1 (South Carolina), europe-west1 (Belgium), europe-north1 (Finland), and southamerica-east1 (São Paulo, Brazil). The CVS-Performance service type is available in the europe-west4 (Netherlands) and northamerica-northeast1 (Montreal) regions. See Regional availability for Cloud Volumes Service.
Feature: Volumes that use the CVS service type can be backed up to Google Cloud Storage using the API for long-term protection and disaster recovery. See Back up and restore a cloud volume.
Feature: Volumes that use the CVS-Performance service type can use NFSv4.1 ACLs. See Create and manage NFS volumes.

Feature: Cloud Volumes Service supports the NFSv4.1 protocol during volume creation. NFSv4.1 offers better performance, built-in locking, and composite remote procedure calls (RPCs) for applications requiring these additional capabilities. See Create and manage NFS volumes.
Feature: Cloud Volumes Service supports SMBv3 multichannel to achieve higher performance for Windows applications. See best practices when deploying SMB volumes with SMBv3 multichannel.
