These backup images don't have any dependencies on the\nbackup/recovery appliance. During the snapshot job, the appliance uploads\nmetadata to an OnVault pool. If the appliance that created the snapshot was lost or\nunavailable, you can recover using a different appliance, using the metadata\nstored in the OnVault pool.\n\nTo accomplish this, the management console user interface supports the import\nof persistent disk snapshot images between managed appliances using an\n[OnVault pool](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/concepts/using-onvault-pools).\n\nImport with ownership\n---------------------\n\nWhile importing the images, there is an option to take ownership. Selecting this\noption causes ownership to be transferred to the appliance to which the metadata\nis imported. Ownership gives full control over images, including the ability to\nexpire them. This should only be specified if the original appliance has been\npermanently lost, and you want the new appliance to take over responsibility\nfor backup expiration. Selecting **Take ownership** when the original appliance\nis still online results in failed backup jobs.\n\nPersistent disk snapshot images can be imported from the\n[Storage Pool](#storage) page and from the [Applications](#application) page.\n\nYou can forget imported persistent disk snapshot images if they are no longer\nneeded or if they were imported accidentally.\nSee [Forget imported persistent disk snapshot image](#forget) for details.\n\nValidate the importing appliance\n--------------------------------\n\nBefore you perform an import, you need to know the following:\n\n- The name of the source appliance that created the Compute Engine instance backups.\n- The OnVault storage pool where the source appliance stored the image metadata.\n- The name of the appliance that imports this metadata.\n\nValidate the appliance performing the import has access to the relevant\nOnVault pool using the following instructions.\n\n1. Go to **Manage** \\\u003e **Storage Pools**.\n2. Identify all OnVault pools that are known to the appliance performing the import from the **Appliance** column.\n3. Validate that the OnVault pool that contains the metadata is listed. Note that if the source and target appliances are both managed by the same management console, then the pool should be listed twice---once for each appliance.\n\nIf the storage pool is not listed, you first need to add the pool to the\ntarget appliance using the procedure in\n[OnVault pool](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/concepts/using-onvault-pools).\n\nImport persistent disk snapshot images from the storage pool\n------------------------------------------------------------\n\nUse these instructions to import persistent disk snapshot images from storage\npool:\n\n1. Click **Manage** and select **Storage Pools** from the drop-down menu.\n2. Right-click the **OnVault** pool and select **Import PD Snapshot Images** from the drop-down menu.\n3. Select the appliance that was used to run the backups that you want to access.\n4. Select the specific Compute Engine instance you want or import all instances.\n5. Optionally, select the **Take Ownership** option.\n For information on importing with ownership, see\n [Import with ownership](#ownership).\n\n6. Click **Import** and the import operation begins. A message is shown once the\n operation completes.\n\n When import is complete, the application images are listed in the **Access**\n page as remote snapshots.\n\nImport persistent disk snapshot images from the Applications page\n-----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nImporting images from the App Manager **Applications** page has the\nadvantage of allowing you to quickly import images for the selected application.\n\nUse these instructions to import persistent disk snapshot images:\n\n1. From the Backup and DR Service management console, click\n **App Manager** and select **Applications** from the drop-down menu.\n\n The **Applications** page opens.\n2. Right-click on an application that is protected in an OnVault Pool\n and select the **Import PD Snapshot Images** option.\n\n3. From the **Select Target Appliance** drop-down menu, select the appliance to\n which the image to be imported.\n\n4. Optionally, enable the **Take Ownership** option.\n For information on importing with ownership, see\n [Import with ownership](#ownership).\n\n5. Click **Import** and the import operation begins.\n\n A message is displayed when the operation completes.\n\nForget imported persistent disk snapshot images\n-----------------------------------------------\n\nIf imported images are no longer needed, you can remove them with the\n**Forget Imported PD Snapshot Images** option.\n\nUse these instructions to forget imported persistent disk snapshot images:\n\n1. Click **Manage** and select **Storage Pools** from the drop-down menu.\n\n The **Storage Pools** page opens.\n2. Right-click the **OnVault** pool and select\n **Forget Imported PD Snapshot Images** from the drop-down menu.\n\n3. Select the source appliance.\n\n4. Click **Forget** . After the operation completes, remote snapshots are\n removed. They no longer appear in the timeline view. You can monitor the\n progress of a forget job from the **Monitor** \\\u003e **Jobs**."]]
