Once you discover one or more\napplications, you can protect them all at once by applying a [backup template](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/create-plan/create-template)\nand [profile](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/concepts/resource-profiles#create-profile) or you can add them to the applications list as\nunmanaged or ignored VMs.\n\nTo discover and protect VMware VMs:\n\n1. In the management console, click the **App Manager** drop-down menu and\n select **Applications**.\n\n2. Click **Add Application**.\n\n3. Select **VMware Engine**.\n\n4. Click **[Add New Server](#add-server)** to add vCenters or an ESXi server.\n\n5. Select a vCenter or an ESXi server where you want to perform VM discovery\n and click **Next** from the server list.\n\n6. On the **Manage** page, a list of VMs appears. Select a VM to discover\n and click **Next**.\n\n7. Apply the policy template and profile to the Compute Engine instance:\n\n 1. Select one or more VMs that you want to protect.\n\n 2. Select **Apply Backup Plan**.\n\n 3. Select **Apply Backup Plan** from the **Choose action** drop-down list.\n\n The **Choose template** drop-down list opens.\n 4. Select a template from the **Choose template** drop-down list.\n\n The **Choose profile** drop-down list opens.\n 5. Click **OK**.\n\n8. Click **Application Settings** for each VM in the list to make changes to\n the default configuration.\n\n The **Application Details and Settings** page opens.\n See [Configure application settings for VMs](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/backup/app-details-settings-vmware-vm)\n9. If there are multiple VMs and you want to make the same changes to\n all the VMs, click **define settings for all applications** and make the\n necessary changes.\n\n10. Click **Next**.\n\n11. Review the summary screen. If everything is correct, click **Finish**\n to complete the onboarding process. The selected VMs are backed up based on the\n policy template that you select.\n\n12. After onboarding is complete, a dialog appears. Click **Finish** again.\n\n Once the policy template is attached to the selected VMs, the status changes\n to a check mark.\n\n The check mark indicates that your VMs are ready to run a backup job\n within the schedule by the policy. If you want to run the job immediately,\n see [Run on-demand job](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/monitor-reports/monitor-jobs#run).\n\nAdd a server\n------------\n\nIn case the vCenter or ESXi server of interest isn't in the server list,\nadd the VCenter or ESXi as new server using the following instructions.\n\n1. Click **Add New Server**.\n\n2. For **Type**, keep vCenter, the default, or select ESXi.\n\n3. Add the hostname and a friendly path for the host in **Hostname** .\n The name of the host must start with a letter, and contain letters,\n digits (0-9), and an underscore (*_*).\n\n4. Enter the IP address of the host in the **IP Address** field.\n\n5. Optionally, you can enter the port number---if you aren't using\n the default port number---in the **Port** field.\n\n | **Note:** The default management port is 443.\n6. Enter the login credentials for authentication in the **Username** and\n **Password** fields.\n\n7. Select one or more backup/recovery appliances where you want to add the\n server from the **Appliance(s)** checklist.\n\n8. Click **Add** to add the new server.\n If the information provided is incorrect, you see an error message and the\n new server isn't added.\n\nWhat's next\n-----------\n\n- To define application settings, see [Configure application settings for VMware VMs](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/backup/configure-application-settings-for-vmware-vm).\n\nThe VMware administrator's guide\n--------------------------------\n\nThis page is one in a series of pages specific to protecting and recovering\nVMware VMs with Backup and DR.\nYou can find additional information at:\n\n- [Backup and DR for VMware VMs](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/concepts/vmware-intro)\n- [Configure Google Cloud VMware Engine for Backup and DR protection](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/configuration/prepare-vmware)\n\n- [Add vCenter and ESX server hosts to the management console](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/configuration/add-vcenter-host)\n\n- [Discover and protect VMware VMs](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/configuration/discover-and-protect-vms)\n\n- [Apply a backup template to protect a VM](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/create-plan/apply-backup-template-to-manage-a-VM)\n\n- [Configure Application settings for VMware VMs](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/backup/configure-application-settings-for-vmware-vm)\n\n- [Restore a VMware VM](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/restore-data/restore-vm)\n\n- [Mount a VMware image](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/access-data/mount-vmware-image)\n\n- [Clone an image of a VMware VM](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/access-data/clone-image-of-a-vm)\n\n- [Create LiveClone workflows](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/access-data/create-liveclone-workflows)\n\n- [Move VM management between two backup/recovery appliances](/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/configuration/supported-vmware)"]]
